For those of you looking for a project that doesn’t last quite as long as 365 Project, may I suggest you consider joining me in a Day50 project?

Back in 2009, on the 50th day of the year, I took 50 photos with my 50mm lens (you can see all 50 photos in this set on flickr). What a blast! I loved the project for a couple reasons:

  • There was no time large time commitment – the project was over in just one day.
  • You didn’t have to do anything special – I just went through my normal day and took my camera with me wherever I went. Some of my photos were more artistic some were more “hey, this is what I’m doing right now”
  • It forced me to use a lens that I love, and yet rarely use

The 50th day of the year is February 19, which happens to be a Saturday this year, which might make it easier for others to particpate (in 2009, it was a work day, so I had to bring my camera to work, which I felt a bit awkward about, so I didn’t get many pictures during the day). Don’t have a 50mm lens? No problem, just take 50 photos at 50mm on a zoom lens, or at any set focal length if you don’t have a zoom lens that covers 50mm. Don’t have a DSLR? That’s fine, just commit to taking 50 photos in one day.

This is my favorite “quickie” photography project I’ve ever done, so I think a few of you might enjoy it as much as I do. If you decide to do it, too, after you post your photos somewhere, leave a link in the comments (of this post or any post) and I promise to go check out your photos!

  • Here's my 50on50 set for February 19th. It was a success in that it was a great experience and I posted more pictures for this one day than most months. I'm hopeful that I'll be closer to 50 photos when I try this again next year.

    Hey btw sorry about these double-posts, I keep trying to post from a 15 year old version of ie.

  • I planned to do this last year and ended up with a terrible fever so I didn't feel like trying to focus and think. Its been on my calendar since christmas so I hope to do it this year. I have a 50mm om lens for my olympus e-620... Its manual focus but it will be good practice.

    Hope I remember - I too love my 50mm and hardly use it (the 17-40 is just much more flexible for me). Thanks for the heads-up!

    I've just bought a 50mm :) yayy!!

    And Feb 19 happens to be a Saturday, so I'll be able to spend the entire day with the 50mm. I can't take my camera to work, too many restrictions, and more security checks than an airport.

    Just got to set a reminder for the day.

  • I'll be doing this project with my 50mm OM 1 lens on my Olympus E420 so, it's really 100mm, but I love that lens, it's a fast little sucker, only thing that is a bit of a pain is manually focusing without the split crystal view finder of the good ol' days.

    This isn't a bad idea... hrmm... might have to try it... or at least something similar.

    Does it have the same ring to it as "Day 50-ish"? 50-ish photos on some day somewhere around the 50th day? lol

    I love this idea. I've been following your flickr for a while and I just realized from a couple pics that we are from the same area. How strange is that? I have to work feb 19th, but I am really going to try to get in 50 good shots on that day. I also have the Rebel xTi and a 50mm...its my favorite lens but for some reason I never get it out. This will be a good reason to do just that.
