Gimp actually can't handle raw files on its own, so you're going to have to either edit the raw files yourself using some software (for instance, I'm assuming your camera came with some software that can edit raw files) and then convert them to a file that Gimp can recognize OR you can install UFRaw - http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/ - it's a plug-in for Gimp that allows you to open raw files - when you try opening a raw file in Gimp, it will pop up a window that will allow you to adjust the settings, when you click OK, it will open the image in Gimp, so you can continue to edit it.

I keep meaning to write an entry about UFRaw... but... well, I haven't yet! But someone did on DPS! You can check out that article here: http://digital-photography-school.com/opening-r...

Another Picasa fan here! I sort and cull my photos in Picasa and also love using the straighten and cropping tools before heading over to GIMP. I'm also digging the Faces feature!

A feature I use a lot is the "Email photo" function. It resizes the photos for me so I can send quick snapshots to my mom or blog previews to a friend without a lot of fussing. If you hold multiple items in the tray, you can send a group of photos at once.

What you didn't mention was the easy wat to crop I think that is a great feature. What I do need help in is: How do I move a photo from an E-mail into Picasa. Thanks for any help you can give.
Bob

Oh yeah, also, do you know to turn the screenshot thing OFF? I use SnagIt for all my screenshots, which already allows me to do way more with them than Picasa can, and it really annoys me having Picasa grab it, too. I can't seem to find a preference for that anywhere, though!

Ya know, it's funny. I never thought of it that way. I actually like the raw optimizing. Since I'm only using Picasa to browse and organize my photos, I've never really wanted to see the non-optimized version, since I'm actually looking for the potential of the photos and not what they looked like SOOC. It's an interesting point, though, because I can definitely see the flip side - not only do you make a valid point about exposure bracketing and not being able to see the differences - but also, I'm not learning as much about how well I'm doing or not if I'm only seeing my optimized photos. Maybe I'm doing a crappy job of exposing my photos, but I don't really know, because Picasa is optimizing it for me. Anyway, like I said - great point... I don't think I'll stop using Picasa.. but I DO think it's a valid point :)

I'm so sorry I forgot to link to your blog! It will be in the next Weekend Links. :)

I've never really found it to be a big deal to have all my photos. I'm not sure why I feel I need them all, as I will likely never look at at least half of them again, but... I guess I'm just a digital pack rat?

The thing that annoys me about picasa is it's automatic adjusting of raw files. For example if I am playing with HDR and bracket 3 shots, one +2 EV, one at 0 EV, and one at -2 EV, picasa will auto adjust them all to the same brightness but for example the one that was -2 EV is real grainy because of how much it brightens it. Granted I still use picasa but the auto optimizing of the raw files make it unusable for anything other than organizing pictures (Just to be clear to people, it modifies what it renders the raw file as. the raw file itself remains unchanged). There's been a discussion going on about this on picasa forums for a while now, unsure of the status though.

Because of that my current workflow is a lot more complicated than it should be. I plug card in and copy the files into a folder on my desktop. I then use XnView to preview the raw files since it doesn't do any autocorrecting. I can then quickly delete the bad ones (I delete pictures that I definately don't see any value in keeping, maybe 80-90% of what's left I actually post though, so there's still some pictures I'm feeling kinda "meh" about and keep them just in case). Once I do that I import them into picasa. Then I swear that picasa everytime because it decides to "optimize" images I purposely made darker or brighter. Then open the folder in canon's digital photo professional where I do all my raw tweaking. Once done with that I use dpp to render the raw files to jpg. Then I open up the folder with the rendered jpgs in XnView again and do a batch convert that resizes them to proper size or whatever else I want to do with it.

Aside from all that most of the features in picasa I don't really use. I've debated tagging but if something better comes along the chances of being able to transfer my tags to the new app are going to be slim. Only tag I have right now is an "unpublished" for pictures that for whatever reason I definately don't ever want to publish anywhere. I've also explored the faces feature a little bit but again not too much.

That raw optimizing thing is the only real annoyance I have with it. If they fixed that then I'd be happy with it.
