Yeah, that's a common problem, unfortunately. The best way to combat it is to crop all your images first before you print them - which is what I do. Both Picasa and Gimp have really ways to crop to standard formats (like 8x10), so if you use either of those pieces of software and want to know how to do it, let me know and I can point you in the right direction.

Also, I print all my photos from mpix.com (they print and ship surprisingly fast and I've always been happy with the quality) and if your photo doesn't exactly match the size you order, they'll show you how they're going to crop it, so you can see what will be cut off, and you can and the crop there on the site if you want - so that's another way of going about it.

The only printing I have done it to produce a calendar of my favourite basset hound photographs that my family and friends have to endure! I think the thing that puts me off is knowing I have to calibrate my monitor, sort out printing, frame them and if I still have the energy put them on the wall. The beauty of having a blog is you can show your photographs without all that effort. You are right though and I think I'll make an Easter present to myself to print photographs for my home office wall which are currently bare.

I've finally sorted a place for my daily snaps on my and will get onto my first photograph project for February. http://www.domestic-executive.com/category/dail... Thanks for the inspirational shove in the right direction.

Did you just come over to my house? Did you notice that none of the 7000 pictures I took last year are hanging on my own walls? Stop snooping on me!

Fine. I'll go print some pictures. Then I'll floss. And call my mother. In. That. Order.

Actually, my problem is that I don't value my stuff enough to hang it up. I love many of the pics I've made, but when it comes time to drop $10 to print it and put it in a frame? Cheapskate. I know it is good enough to hang in my own house, but gosh darn it I just want everything to be free!

Maybe it is time to splurge on a gallery wrap (I've drooled over those before) to help me convince myself its good quality stuff.

You know, it's funny. I have always LOVED photography. As a kid I took many photos of my teddy bears. In junior high and high school, "fashion" showes with my friends. In college, I took a BW Photo Development course and a Photoshop 5 course. 5 years ago, I bought my first digital camera, a canon powershot I still posess. I'm a scrap booker, so I do print photos every few months, but they stay tucked away with my scrapbooking stuff. I miss photo albums and photo frames on the walls and desks. I now have a DSRL starter, the nikon d60. And I just ordered a nifty fifty for it. And I bought a ton of photography books, some specific to my camera, some about exposure, shutter speed, etc. But I do need encouragement, because I am definitely ameratur. (and apparently I need spell check too!! lol) And it makes great sense to pick some of my favorites and blow em up and put them out there on the wall to encourage myself to continue to learn more and improve.

It sad that it took one of our dogs dying to finally get pictures in these frames that have been hanging up for 8 months: http://www.flickr.com/photos/18572605@N02/41666...

I was just discussing where to print pictures with a colleague yesterday and today she brought me a book she made as the guestbook for her wedding. She put their engagement photos in all different layouts so that people could sign around them. She created the book at mixbook.com and by seeing her book I would definitely recommend it, for books anyway. I also have always heard mpix is the best so most likely will be printing my photos there. And I love the gallery wraps, they are beautiful!

Another reason to print some of your photos: Make your (well, at least mine) place look more lively. Right now I have nothing on the walls at my place and I've lived there for almost a year now. I plan on getting some of my favorites gathered up and printed at some point. Thanks for linking to the calibration kit at mpix. That used to be my big argument for ezprints.com is they give you an icc profile to "soft proof" the image. Although I still like how ezprints keeps their printers constantly calibrated so you could print an 8x10 today and 6 months later print a mug and canvas and they all look exactly the same. Really as long as you don't go to your local super mega mart for printing they'll come out good (huge inconsistency issues even if printing several pictures at the same time).
