Weekend Links: Special Edition of YOUR links

Myles was a little annoyed that I spent all weekend looking at blogs instead of petting him
Wow, I was overwhelmed with the response from my last entry! Thank you all for the kind words you have said, too. It really means a lot. In return I’ve added the feeds for all the blogs listed below into my reader and I’m going to follow all of you and try to leave some comments along the way in return! If you want to see what all I’ve been reading in the past few days, check out the list I’ve compiled below of all YOUR blogs. I did this in multiple sittings, so I think I got everyone, but if I missed you, please feel free to virtually slap my wrist and leave it in another comment.
Photography blogs
I loved the variety of blogs you guys have – some just have photos with no words, some have photos with all the stories behind them, and some aren’t all about photography, but have bits and pieces of photography mixed in with the every-day life stuff. I loved them all!
- Stephanie Grace Photography blog just celebrated its one year anniversary! Exciting! What’s even more amazing is that I’m pretty sure she’s taking all these photos with a point and shoot. For those of you that need some inspiration about what’s possible with a P&S, check out these landscape photos!
- Melissa just started a 365 project this year and is off to a wonderful start! I especially like that she’s posting a bit of a story-behind-the-photo, too. My favorite so far is one of kids skating over frozen puddles – the contrast between the red jacket and the dull colors of winter is great
- Claire also just started a 365 project. I could link to my favorite day so far (January 5 – love the muted tones in that one), but if I did, you’d miss out on the awesome layout of her front page!
- Silver Horse Photography has some wonderful shots, but this one has the moon, an amazing blue sky, and tree branches – some of my favorite things!
- Well. I just have to like DM|ZE’s blog because he linked to me twice in just one entry! He’s just starting to do a 52 photowalks project, and is planning on blogging about both that and possible some more Gimp tricks/tips, too, so keep checking back on him!
- Someone else with an awesome layout is My Two Seasons – just beautiful! She’s doing both of Project 365 AND 52 Weeks of Gratitude this year, and her dedication to blogging it all is pretty incredible. For a great glimpse at her skills, check out her Best of 2009 post!Ok, I have to admit, I wasted a lot of time clicking through everything on mattstratton.com because his site is about more than just photography, but I’ll focus (ha! focus! No pun intended, I swear) on one of his photography posts and point you to this one about tips for getting great photos with your dSLR, which is a great entry for those of you that just got a dSLR for Christmas! (oh, and congrats on the birth of your twins!)
- Cindy recently went out for a walk in the snow and took photos of her journey and shared it with her readers. Her layout is beautiful, as are the photos!
- I suggest you all start checking out camerani.com – they’re on a mission to find and share all the photography deals they find. Of course, it might be dangerous to follow this blog, because you might start wanting to buy things just because it’s a great deal. Don’t worry, they post some using-your-camera type entries, too, like these 10 reasons why everyone must own a 50mm prime lens!
- Todd, of vrillusions.com, has managed to do something I’ve dreamt of doing for quite some time – take photos of an abandoned building (I just haven’t found any near me that I can get into. But since he lives relatively near me, maybe he can give me some tips!). Anyway, he’s using his blog for more than just photography, but he’s also doing an “at least one photo a week” project, so check him out and follow along!
- Kyle just got a new camera (Rebel XSi! Woot!) so I expect his blog will soon contain a lot of great new photos, but the recent post that I thought was pretty cool was when he created a double exposure photo from two phtoos that he felt were boring on their own, but added a sense of movement together. I didn’t see the originals, but I do like the look of this double exposure! Great idea!
- Radek W has the similar cool layout to Claire, and he also got a new macro lens, check out this ummm… something? My guess is an electric razor? Whatever it is, I love macro!
- I think I asked for this links right at the right time of year, because I’m loving the 2009 recap entries like this one from Tuesday!
- Turns out I’ve seen some of Kristen’s work before and didn’t even know it – she was a finalist in Pioneer Woman’s Holiday Bokeh contest – Congrats, Kristen! This is her photo – I love it! Kristen’s attempting to post a photo-a-day, so if you’re doing the same and want to help keep each other motivated, be sure to follow her!
- Now, Zak. I liked Zak as soon as I first went to his blog because this cow was staring right back at me! I LOVE cows.. and what amazing blue eyes! Zak is 60 days into a 365 project (well, more by the time I post this, actually) – so once again, check him out for some motivation!
- Man, you guys are a dedicated bunch, because vwetlaufer is doing a photo-a-day, too! My favorite so far is this photo of snow-covered mountains – takes my breath away!
- Rick Beato posts a couple of photos a day. For the past few days it’s been aircraft shots – I really liked the Swiss plane in this post and the fact that the sky was clear in the background – but if you’re not into aircraft, don’t worry, he posts more than just that :)
- Question: how cool is the name Angry Octopus Photography? Answer: very. Also loving the tones in this photo – and his eyes. Oh, and guess what? It’s another photo-a-day blog!
- I think we might another link from Christy soon, because she’s in the process of getting her photography site up and running (and I think maybe you typed the url wrong?), but she does have a “typical” blog that happens to have some photos on it, including this beach photo that I thought was pretty. Christy – you let me know when your photography site is up, because I’m looking forward to checking it out!
- Kevin is doing something that a couple of my flickr contacts are doing, too – one photo a day from an iPhone. I’m really impressed with the quality of photos it’s possible to get with that device. While I’m guessing the photos in the slideshow of his Miscanthus Sinensis entry aren’t from his iPhone, the main photo is beautiful, don’t you think? Btw, it’s ok, I had no idea with a Miscanthus Sinensis was, either.
- Guess what? Elizabeth is doing a 365 photo project, too! You guys are making me feel like a slacker! She has three goals to doing this project, one of which is to learn to use her camera in manual mode, and I think that’s an excellent goal! I also think her plan to reward herself with chocolate is a good one, too :) Anyway, not only do I like the angle she used when taking this photo – I also think it’s a darn cute pair of shoes!
- RASL recently posted some photos from March of last year when she was in Mexico – they’re all quite beautiful and I LOVE the photos from her friend’s wedding. What’s even more impressive? They were taken with a point and shoot! I find that so inspiring – see? You don’t need fancy-schmancy expensive cameras!
- Jordan is 16 years old and is starting a photo-a-week project. You can see his photo here. He’s also going to be posting “weekly links” each week, much like the “weekend links” that you see here. He seems much more dedicated than I was to anything when I was 16 years old. Did I do anything worth while when I was 16? Hmmm…
- bouncy sent a link to their 365 set on flickr. My favorite so far is January 3rd. How can you resist that cute puppy dog face???
- David – the link that you left (http://www.dblphotography.com/) did not work for me! Not sure if the link is wrong or the site was just down when I tried it, but let me know and I’ll go back. [Oh! you JUST left another comment explaining why it didn't work. Freaky timing!]
- Theodore Scott posts a large photo with a short description about twice a week, and his photos are beautiful. Check out this orange sunset with silhouttes of birds flying by… it’s just amazing!
- Mali.S’s blogs are in french! Thank goodness for Google Toolbar which could translate for me. I’m not sure John’s high school french classes could have saved me. Obviously, the translation isn’t perfect. I don’t think Mali actually said “I pot my books”, but, I digress. Mali actually has two blogs, one that seems to be a regular blog (with some really cool photos of frost and one devoted to a 365 project, with a really cool photo of snow I love how there’s both the tiny detail of the flake on the left and also the complete softness of the rest of the photo.
- I tweeted recently that it seemed everyone could get a good picture in the snow but me. And Myk is one of those people – check out two kids in walking in the snow – isn’t it sweet? Myk – when you get the wordpress blog working, let me know in another comment and I’ll definitely stop by and check it out!
- Shotslot, when I see your name, I keep wanting to say “slashdot”. But that really has nothing to do with your blog, which not only posts great photos, but actually talks about photography and editing and all that good stuff. I particularly like the photo, and also what you had to say about Lightroom in this post. Sometimes it is nice to give your photos that little bit of extra. I’ve never actually used Lightroom, but I’ve heard some wonderful things about it.
- tvdh, I’m all about themes and projects, but sometimes it’s nice and refreshing to see a “simple” blog like yours that’s just photos of what you feel like whenever you feel like it. I could have picked so many favorites from you – I clicked through for quite some time – but I think I’m gonna hafta go with the extreme close-up of a kiwi. The colors, shapes and textures are so yummy. Actually, so is the fruit. Now I’m drooling.
- Denise – this has nothing to do with your photography, but I got the PW cookbook for Christmas and have already made a few recipes out of it, too! Your guacamole looks so good! Unrelated, your new front porch looks amazing, too! Ok, sorry, back to the blog. Denise is also doing a 365 and sometimes posts just one photo, but sometimes can’t quite decide which one to posts, so she’ll post all of them and ask her readers to pick a favorite (btw, I like the last one the best)
- Elora recently posted a bunch of photos with christmas lights and this one is by far my favorite. Keep following for more daily photos, too!
- Are you looking for yet another person doing a 365 to follow? I thought so! You’ll want to mosey on over to Claire’s blog, then. My favorite of her 365s so far is one of a carousel – the colors and lights are great, but I also like the composition, so that it’s very symmetrical. Well done.
- jeffamadon’s tumblr account is very simple – which I think is a perfect backdrop for the photos – no words, no colors, just showcasing the photos, which range from abastract to landscapes. My favorite recent one is some ice – some pretty great textures in that one!
- Mothman has a blog called The Slothful Moth, and, as he says “As the name implies, I often slack off on the posting frequency” … but can you blame him when he’s the father of this cutie? I can’t.
- There are a lot of photos on haikalaziz’s tumblr account, and a number of them are really impressive. I especially like this photo of an old man sitting next to a bunch of clocks (it looks better than that description sounds, I promise).
- The entries on Sam’s blog consist of both photos, words, and links/information about other resources/inspirations. I’m not wording that well, am I? Well, check it out if you don’t know what I mean! At least check out these chains. What? It’s a photo of chains. I never said I was going to be very good at describing things in these links. (also. I’ve been staying up late to try to get this entry finished before Sunday, and so I’m bit out of it.)
- I’m really loving Geneil’s 365 so far, which made it hard to pick just one shot, but I love kitty paws, and I have two tabby cats myself – one with white paws, so these kitty paws made me melt a little. Geneil also has a blog that’s not 100% photo-related that you can see here.
- At the strongblackcoffee blog, you’ll find lots of photos, usually with all the EXIF data noted, too. I really enjoyed looking at this photowalk through the woods. That photo with the bench? Loved it!
- There are some beautiful photos on The Dusty Cellar Shoots blog, like this rose. Also with the EXIF data!
- I love the style of photography that Sindy Hand has – check out these senior portraits she did for a set of twins! So fun and beautiful.
- Rick has a blog that has a whole photography section. What I really love about his photography posts is that he’s not only posting his photos, but also describing the story behind them and how he took them. Like this entry about using available light and flash for Christmas photos.
- chj has a lot goals for 2010 when it comes to photography, I’m looking forward to seeing them come to life over the year!
In addition, if you’re looking for some fellow photographers to follow on twitter, might I suggest the following?
- @siverhorsesc – of Silver Horse Photography linked above.
- @MyTwoSeasons – of My Two Seasons linked above.
- Remember camarani above? The blog posting about great camera deals? They’re on twitter, too – @TheCamerani
- Looks like @BPatrickColt just recently joined twitter and could use some followers! You can also see his photos on his flickr account.
Non-photography blogs
Finally, check out these blogs that other readers write in (and use their photos in) that aren’t necessarily photo-related:
- Rich Bard writes a blog for Ecohearth.com about wildlife and environmental issues, and uses his own photos whenever he can!
- Remember Elora above? She took a photo with the christmas lights. Anyway, she also has an blog about being a Canadian living in Italy.
I always open to more links, so if you ever have anything else to share, let me know!
